The impact of direct giving.
Like many students, Esther faced the dual challenge of maintaining her grades and securing enough funds to meet her educational expenses. To help pay her way through college, Esther took up house cleaning. During this phase of her life, she encountered a unique expression of generosity that deeply influenced her perspective and future. One couple stood out, and everything changed when they shared their philosophy on giving back.
In Esther’s own words, here is her story:
After 6 months of working in their home, one couple I cleaned for told me they don’t contribute to charities. They had a tax practice and knew the tax deductibility that this provided them. However, what mattered to them in their giving was helping people they saw in front of them. They picked university students who they felt were working hard and gave them a monthly stipend. The only requirement was that grades be kept to at least a B average and to do it for someone else in the future.
They gave me $150.00 every month until I graduated. It made a huge difference to me, and I have never forgotten their generosity. I was able to achieve both of their requirements. It taught me how valuable generosity can be and how it can continue from one to another ongoing.
Generosity that lasts a lifetime
This couple chose not to make tax-deductible donations to charities but to personally identify individuals striving to better themselves and assist them in a practical and meaningful way. This story is a testament to the incredible difference personal generosity can make while creating relationships that last a lifetime. Esther continues to advocate for the same form of direct giving and inspire others in her community, fulfilling the couple’s only requirement, which is that she pay it forward.
A personal note from Esther:
My early experience with giving showed me that our personal, direct gifts can make a lasting impact on someone’s life. I am forever grateful for this lesson in generosity—and I treasure a photo of them with me at my wedding to David.
Has anyone helped you along the way? I would love to hear your stories.
